Welcome to Dust Smasher!

Rachael Dust Smasher

Hi, I’m Rachael, founder of Dust Smasher. (Look—there I am up the hills!)

Before I became a freelance writer, I worked for several years in the quality departments of food manufacturing companies.

Cleanliness and order are ingrained in me and help me to keep things organized at home too!

I then completed my postgraduate diploma in environmental management and pollution control before becoming an environmental officer.

Monitoring and reducing pollution is a passion of mine. I have done many ‘unsexy’ jobs in the pursuit of creating safer environments.

From monitoring effluent to implementing waste management strategies – I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty on the road to improving systems for health and sustainability.

Whilst implementing ways to help reduce pollution in the workplace, I came to realize something worrying. Places of employment have legislation to keep work environments safe – but is the same true of our homes?

No.

In fact, the air in our homes is often many times more polluted than the air outdoors!

It was after this realization that I started getting obsessed with improving the safety of my home for my family by reducing indoor pollution.

I created Dust Smasher, intending to help other people to reduce the pollution in their homes too.

A great place to start on the site for the basics of indoor air pollution is the article Indoor Air Quality Guide: How to Measure Air Pollution at Home.

Indoor Air Pollution

The importance of cleaning and home improvements

What I came to realize through my years of working in Quality Control and Pollution Mitigation is that a difficult job doesn’t have to be hard—not with the right tools.

And this is what we’re missing so much at home.

We try and ‘get by’ with what we’ve got but then end up begrudging the task and maybe even putting it off altogether.

This, unfortunately, never gets rid of the problem, and in some instances, it will even cause further damage to your home.

After all, mitigation should be your first action to avoid property disrepair. (You mitigate so you don’t have to manage the problem in the first place!)

So with Dust Smasher, I’d love to share with you the tips and tricks I know to help get these common problems dealt with and recommend any useful tools to make your life easier.

The Cleaning Plan

Green cleaning and cleaning services

As I continue to grow Dust Smasher, I have felt the need to better represent cleaning with fewer chemicals where possible.

From working in industries where the risk of contamination was unacceptable, it takes some time to move away from the chemicals that the cleaning industry is known for.

However, there are many jobs at home that do not require the same level of harsh chemicals that industrial-sized production facilities would rely upon.

In light of this, there is more content representing how to clean or treat pests at home with environmentally friendly alternatives. This means keeping your home tidy whilst looking after the planet and waterways.

It will also protect those at home that may be at greater risk, such as pets, children and those with medical conditions that would be sensitive to harsh chemicals.

Where DIY cleaning options are either not effective for the scale of the problem – or you simply don’t wish to get your hands dirty! – I also refer to effective cleaning services I come across that provide value.

When people hear the term air pollution, they often assume it relates solely to the air outside. However, as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies have shown, indoor air can often be more polluted than outside.
